Volunteer Coach Background Checks

New Recreation Safety Initiative

Roxbury has a long tradition of providing excellent recreation programs and facilities for the residents of the Township. In an effort to further advance the success of all our Recreation programs, the Roxbury Township Recreation Department working with the Roxbury Recreational Advisory Committee is in the process of implementing a new safety initiative.  The Township has engaged the assistance of the National Center for Safety Initiatives (NCSI) to provide a standardized approach to providing background screening for our coaches. The goal is to ensure the highest level of safety within the programs offered to our residents.

The new back ground check initiative will be implemented in two phases. The first phase will be voluntary through the fall of 2009. After that time, this screening will be mandatory for those individuals who are responsible for coaching or training Township sponsored recreational activities. The cost for this background check will be free for Roxbury residents, details regarding the types of confidential checks to be conducted by NCIS can be found on the Roxbury Township website located at the following location:

www.roxburynj.us

Further information can be obtained through the Township Recreation Department at 973-448-2016.

Dear Volunteer Youth Sport Coach:

Roxbury Township Recreation Department is proud to announce its partnership with National Center for Safety Initiatives, through which we will engage in a comprehensive background screening program for our coaches and volunteers.

Roxbury Township Recreation Department has taken important steps to ensure the highest level of safety within our programs.  One of these steps is the implementation of a standardized approach to background screening for our coaches and volunteers.

This includes a comprehensive background screening using NCSI’s full service product and a simple “Red Light/Green Light” clearance report issued in accordance with the Recommended Guidelines® published by the National Council of Youth Sports. This is part of a national movement towards the standardization of safety programs for youth-serving organizations in this country.

Roxbury Township Recreation Department has worked with National Center for Safety Initiatives to ensure that this process is convenient, secure and confidential.

Simply go to http://www.ncsisafe.com and click on “Background Check Self Registration” on the left side of the webpage. Complete three easy steps:

Step 1: Enter Self Registration Number: 55678544

Step 2: Enter Your Information as Requested

Step 3: Provide Legal Authorization and Certification

The “Red Light/Green Light” Results will be sent to Roxbury Township Recreation Department. National Center for Safety Initiatives will contact you directly if there are any questions, problems or issues related to your specific information.  An email address is required when completing the background check as our contact with you will largely be electronic.

It is important when entering your name, that you use your full legal name as written on your birth certificate or driver’s license. Please also verify that your social security number was typed correctly. Using nicknames or failing to type a correct social security number may delay or invalidate your background check.

In addition to the comprehensive background screening listed above, the five criteria questions that will be asked will be:

1. Have you ever been convicted of a felony?

2. Have you ever been convicted of any lesser crime involving force or threat of force against a person?

3. Have you ever been convicted of a lesser crime in which sexual relations is an element?

4. Have you ever been convicted of a lesser crime involving controlled substances (not paraphernalia or alcohol)?

5. Have you ever been convicted of a lesser crime involving cruelty to animals?

If you have any questions or problems submitting your information, please call the National Center for Safety Initiatives at (866) 833-7100.

Thank you for your continued participation and your cooperation in this important process. We are excited to offer world-class programs, working with world-class people!
