Summer 2014 Programs and Activities:

For some summertime fun, check out the 'Township Parks and Playgrounds' page and visit all of the parks in town! Several parks have recent improvements; Horseshoe Lake Beach has a new sprinkler park, Berkshire Valley Park has a new tennis court and a court marked for street hockey, basketball and Foursquare, and Black River Park has a new picnic area with benches.The Dog Park at Emmans Road has been improved, and there is a new trail in Landing called the Ice Age Trail... Check it out!

Water Carnival at Horseshoe Lake Beach
Come and enjoy the 41st year of this event, held on Thursday, July 24th at 1pm-2:30pm. This is a free event, and is open to the public; beach badges are not required. Appropriate for ages 4 through 13. Events include: Sack Races, Water Balloon Toss, Rock Scramble, Ball & Spoon Races, plus more. Every child gets Cliff's Ice Cream and prizes will be awarded!

Social Services 'Back to School' Backpacks
In need are: unisex, high school appropriate backpacks, 3x5 index cards, scissors, mechanical pencils, scientific calendars ($12 version), pencil cases that fit in binders, 1.5 and 2 inch binders, black and blue pens. Donations can be brought to Social Services on Mondays and Fridays, 8am-1pm, Wednesdays 8am-5pm, and to the Rec Office on Tuesdays and Thursdays. All donations are appreciated!

Curbside Cinemas
Join the fun and free movies at Horseshoe Lake Beach on Thursday nights in July! The first 100 children will receive a fun free toy! Movies start at dusk, which is around 8:30pm.

Tri Harder Kids Triathlon
This mini-triathlon is planned for Thursday, July 24th at Horseshoe Lake Complex. Age groups are 4-6, 7-8, 9-10, 11-12, and 13-14. Must be pre-registered to participate; register online at  Sign-in starts at 5:15pm; event begins at 6pm. All children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Wear bathing suit and sunscreen; bring goggles, towel, socks, sneakers, bike, helmet, and hand towel to clean feet after swim. Participation medals to all, no individual awards. Times are not certified - this is a recreational event. Sponsored by Roxbury Recreation and Marty's Reliable Cycle, with support from Hillside Lutheran Brethren Church. Click on TriHarder for flyer. Everyone is a winner!! Fee: $10.

Free Yoga Sessions
All levels and all ages welcome! Horseshoe Lake, 10am-11am on Saturday, July 26th. Meet at flag pole near baseball concession stand. More info on Yoga flyer.

1st Annual Children's Carnival
Sunday, August 3rd, 3pm-6:30pm, at Horseshoe Lake. Each game is only a quarter to play! All proceeds benefit Roxbury's Social Services. Click Carnival for more info.

FoodStock 2014
Save the date!!  Come enjoy a full day of bands from all over the Northeast at Horseshoe Lake's bandshell! Saturday, August 30th, 11am-6:30pm. Admission is 64oz or more of canned food items that Community Foodbank of NJ will be distributing to over 400 food banks in New Jersey, including Roxbury's Social Services. It will be a great event; don't miss it!! More info at Foodstock.

Wrestling Camp
This camp is designed to teach the fundamentals of wrestling at a pace suitable for a young child. Interactive games and drills will be introduced to develop balance and agility necessary for wrestling. Camp runs Monday, July 21st through Thursday, July 24th, 8:30am-11:30am, at Roxbury High School Auxiliary Gym.  Children entering 2nd-8th grade in September are eligible.  Coaches include Jim Dolan, Head Wrestling Coach at RHS, plus David Monaco, Assistant Wrestling Coach at RHS.  Register online or in-person at the Recreation Office. Tennis Summer Camp
Beginners to advance players are welcome; each camper will be grouped with other players at appropriate skill level. Emphasis will be on drills, match play, strategy, plus singles and doubles instruction. Two sessions are offered: July 14-17, and July 21-24. Girls Lacrosse Camp
For girls entering 9th through 12th grade. This camp is designed to enhance stick skills, speed, agility, and team offense and defense. Dates are Monday, July 28th-Thursday, July 31st, 9am-12pm. Camp will take place at the Roxbury High School Turf Field. For more info and registration form, click Girls Lax. Fee: $80.

Fall 2014 Programs and Activities:

Cross Country
Join the program to 'Go The Distance' and have fun while running. Must be 7 years old by December 31, 2014, or have been on the XC team last year.  Birth year must be 2007 or earlier.  First practice is Monday, August 25th, 6pm, at the Horseshoe Lake Pavilion.  The XC Team will be attending the 2nd annual Cross Country Night at the Somerset Patriots Ballpark. Instructional Flag Football Clinic
This program is for children ages 5 through 1st grade as of December 1st, 2014. It includes learning the fundamentals of flag football. No experience necessary. The program will be held Monday and Wednesday evenings beginning August 25th at the Horseshoe Lake Fields, 6pm-7:15pm. Coaches needed too! Please register online or in-person at Roxbury Recreation. Fee: $50, includes t-shirt.

Jr. Gaels Football 
Football practice will begin on August 4th, and will be held Mondays-Thursdays throughout August. Games will begin in September, and run through early November. For programs, please see below for eligibility as of the September 2014 school year:
      Pre-Clinic -             boys entering 3rd grade (must be age 8 by Oct. 1st)
      Clinic -                   boys entering 4th grade
      Super Pee Wee -    boys entering 5th grade
      Pee Wee -             boys entering 6th grade
      J.V. -                     boys entering 7th grade
      Varsity -                 boys entering 8th grade

NEW PROGRAM! NFL Flag Football
Join the team! This program is open to boys and girls in 2nd-5th grade as of September 2014. Pre-season practice begins August 25th for two weeks. Games are planned for Sundays, and 1-2 practices per week.  Registration is now open online and in-person at the Recreation Center. Please click NFL Flag for more info. PlaySMART Preschool/Kindergarten Enrichment Program
Play University's program is designed for children ages 3 1/2 to 6. PlaySMART is a 6-week, brain-boosting program that combines sports, fitness, academics and fun all into one. By choosing to PlaySMART, each child must 'think' their way through fun-filled activities that teach sports skills and build fitness fundamentals while creatively integrating academic concepts. A different sport and academic element is introduced and taught weekly. Location: Horseshoe Lake Recreation Complex. Dates/Times: Tuesdays-10:30am-11:30am, September 16-October 21(rain-date October 28) or Wednesdays 1:30pm-2:30pm, September 17-October 22, (rain-date October 29th).
